We are available to answer any of your questions before you buy guitar strings from us. Traditionally, the guitar is tuned E, A, D, G, B, e. Perhaps the best known is the six string acoustic guitar. There are several varieties of acoustic (un-amplified) guitars, and we have guitar strings for all of them. The most common of these are the Spanish style steel string flat top and the classical guitar. Steel string guitars are usually much more substantial in construction than classical guitars. This is necessary for them to withstand the considerable tension exerted on them by their metal strings. Although they are often called steel string guitars, acoustic guitar strings have steel cores wound with another metal, usually bronze. Classical guitars are typically strung with nylon strings. Until the twentieth century, guitars and other string instruments were usually strung with gut strings. Advances in technology led to the introduction of nylon and other synthetic materials for making guitar strings that offer greatly increased performance over their gut predecessors. Other developments in the early twentieth century led to another popular variation of the six string guitar: the electric.
Electric guitars, like their acoustic counterparts, come in many varieties. In fact, due to their particular method of reproducing sound, there are probably more variations of the electric guitar than any other stringed instrument. The most common electrics are the solid body and the semi hollow body. Well known examples of solid body electric guitars are made by Fender and Gibson. Famous semi hollow body guitars are made by Gretsch, D’Angelico and Rickenbacker. Unlike an acoustic guitar, which relies on the vibration of its wooden parts to produce sound, the electric guitar uses magnetic pickups to convert the vibration of the guitar strings, and to a lesser extent, the body, into an electrical signal. This is then sent to an amplifier, which allows the player to play at whatever volume he chooses. There are advantages to this method beyond simple loudness. Since an electric guitar does not need to amplify sound itself, one can use much lighter guitar strings on it. Lighter strings make possible many playing techniques that are very difficult if not simply impossible on an acoustic instrument. Electric guitar strings are typically wound with nickel plated steel, although some people prefer pure nickel or stainless steel.
Of course, there are many other types of guitars. Acoustic-electric guitars are acoustics which have a pickup mounted inside, which can be played either by themselves or with an amplifier. There are both acoustic and electric 12 string guitars, which have the normal six strings as well as octave strings for the E, A, D, and G and unison strings for the B and high e. Resophonic guitars are also sometimes known as Dobros, after a popular brand of resophonic made by National. There are also varieties of guitars that are played flat, with the strings facing up. There are several of these including the lap steel, pedal steel and Hawaiian lap steel. There are also baritone guitars, which are usually tuned a fourth lower than regular tuning, and have a longer neck to accommodate the larger gauge guitar strings and lower tunings.
As you can see from the list of all the different kinds of guitar strings for sale, there are even more types of guitars than described here. It seems very likely that as long as people are making new kinds of music, they will be inventing new types of guitars. We have the largest selection of guitar strings in the world; we try to meet all of your string needs. When you buy guitar strings from JustStrings, you won’t be disappointed.
