Elixir Electric Guitar NanoWeb Coating, .009 - .042, 120023Dave BJanuary 17, 2012First, this review has nothing to do with string life. I also want to preface that Elixir electrics sound better on another guitar I have (Taylor T3) than other strings I've tried. I just finished an in home shoot out. Contenders were these, D'Addario and Fender 3150L (pure nickel). I was going for gauge, and D'Addario doesn't have pure nickel in this gauge, only plated, and Elixir doesn't state what these are made of. D'Addario pure nickel have slightly smaller bass strings. For the comparison, I changed strings after a few days so they still all sounded very good. These were third place to the Fender. The Fender were clearer above the 12th fret and I am guessing because of the bullet end (am using a Strat), on the string there was sustain. The Elixir were not as defined as either of the other two for chording. Again, this is a very good string. I choose the Fender because of perceived clarity above the 12th and overall sustain.

NanoWeb Coating

The development of NanoWeb Coating was initiated by musician feedback. At a mere 400 nanometers thick, NanoWeb Coating is about 30% of the thickness of PolyWeb Coating -- the original coating technology featured on Elixir Strings. Substantial innovations by Gore in fluoropolymer technology have enabled the development of this ultra-thin coating that retains the exceptionally high durability that musicians have come to expect from Elixir Strings.

Science � Music � Magic

For nearly two years, Gore scientists studied the physics of a guitar string. Extensive testing of experimental guitar strings with musicians led to the development of specifications for ELIXIR Guitar Strings. Three different guitar strings prototypes were evaluated by nearly 15,000 musicians over a twelve month period. After additional refinements, Gore scientists and players agreed they had a string with superior sound, excellent durability, and a great appearance.

Today, musicians rate sound quality in side-by-side string tests, while engineers measure string sound characteristics with a dynamic signal analyzer (DSA). DSA testing is particularly effective in evaluating the exceptional sustain of ELIXIR Guitar Strings. Gore also designed and built a unique abrasion testing device that simulates the wear of the coating during play. Coating durability is also evaluated using high-speed photography.
