When Giorgio Pirazzi set up his stringmaking factory in Germany in 1798, strings were made of gut. Today, most stringmaking companies have abandoned natural materials, but Pirastro carries on the old tradition of making gut strings by hand, alongside strings with synthetic and steel cores, to give discerning musicians a choice. The Eudoxa line of double bass strings from Pirastro still provides the true traditional sound of gut strings. These strings are made, wound and polished by hand the traditional way using a sheep gut core that is wound with silver. The result is a clear and brilliant sound, long sustain and complex tonal response. These strings can be used for either arco or pizzicato playing. They are made for orchestra tuning.
