D'Addario Bass Half-Rounds
December 22, 2009
First of all, I am delighted that a manufacturer is even making these in a 6 string configuration. I recently got into fretless with a 7-string Conklin B.D. Groove Tools bass that was converted to fretless. It had flatwounds on it, which were quiet and smooth as glass to play, and the tone was deep full, yet lacked the brightness of my fretted basses. When I put these half-rounds on I was amazed. I would say about 85-90% of the brightness came back giving me that 'edge' I want when I need it. And, they kept string noise to a minimum. Not as silent as flats, but quiet enough and unnoticable in an ensemble setting with plenty of smoothness and 'mwa'. For the high F on the 7 string I used a D'Addario Electric Bass Plain Steel XL .020, XLB020p, works just fine. The half-rounds work great as a cross between flats and rounds on fretless basses. They really do deliver what D'Addario says they will deliver.
