D'Addario Guitar Electric Bass Nickel Wound XL Fender Electric Bass VI Short Scale, .024 - .084, XL1565Barry BeattieJune 16, 2011These strings have a great bright tone, with one problem: The bottom E. It's too floppy and dead. It won't tune properly. I'm really surprised too. But looking at the tension chart, it's obvious why I'm not getting the "Spring" on the low E string that's there with the other strings in this set. The A also has this problem but not so much. Damn shame. Starting with a 0.024 is a great idea, but the E (and a lesser extent the A) either needs a thicker string (like a 0.095) or a thicker core to provide more tension. I'm using my 1962 Bass VI as a Bass (so the low E string really matters) as well as baritone lead lines and chords. Except for the lowest strings, the tone I'm after is there with these strings, but for something as critical as playing bass with Bass VI, 90% there isn't good enough. Sorry.

"In the sixties, the most popular electric guitar strings were either round wound or pressure wound strings with a pure nickel wrap wire. However, the pure nickel windings just didn't have the brilliance that musicians were looking for, and the pressure winding process caused work hardening in the wire, which made the strings stiff and lacking in fundamental tonal characteristics.

John D'Addario knew that he could come up with something better, and he sought out a magnetic alloy that would wind smooth and flexible, and offer rock and pop musicians a brighter, truer sounding string. The result: the nickel-plated steel wrap wire that virtually every major string company uses today.

Over the last two decades, the XL line has expanded to over 20 different gauged sets and 44 different diameter individual strings. All XL sets are available in D'Addario's breakthrough environmental packaging, as well as standard packaging."
