Product Reviews for Aquila Guitar Alchemia Nylgut/Sterling Set Heavy, GALCS-H

Aquila Guitar Alchemia Nylgut/Sterling Set Heavy, GALCS-H5Alexander HillNovember 3, 2010These strings are great; the strings blend great together, the nylon gut strings have a unique sound compared to nylon and the G string doesn't have the strange tone like many nylon string sets. Another great thing I've seen with these strings is that they can be played with finger nails or with out them unlike gut which will roughen from finger nail contact and split. The winding around the bass strings makes them last much longer than silver plated copper strings, and when the silver started to become dirty, I just used a silver cleaning kit on the strings and it restored them to almost brand new sound. The description for the strings about the trebles stretching a crazy amount isn't joking, the string that will stretch the most is the high E string so be careful to make sure it doesn't grind against the wood where the tuning peg is on the guitar or it could cause it to snap. These strings do take some getting use to compared to playing clear nylon treble strings, but they do have a similar texture of rectified nylon strings, the strings also have a good stiffness to them almost like gut strings except with a slight tone difference almost not noticeable, with a much longer life span than gut. The only thing is, is that the bass strings don't sound much like wound silk strings and are thinner than silk strings. The bass strings are warmer than nylon strings which have a raspy sound. Overall I would recommend these strings over sets of nylon strings or carbon fiber strings for the original guitar sound of gut. Also I would recommend that people buy this set of aquila's nylon gut strings instead of the other set with the silver plated copper wound basses, because these sterling bass string in this set last much longer and don't have the silver come off and expose copper which corrodes extremely fast from finger sweat and moisture in the air and kill the tone of the string.
IMPORTANT INSTALLATION INFORMATION:

Nylgut is a completely different material than Nylon and needs a bit of extra care during installation because of its soft surface and different molecular structure.

First check that the string channels in the nut are rounded and have no sharp edges, especially the lower edges facing the fingerboard. Because the string approaches from a slightly downward angle, if that edge is sharp the string can hang up on it, create a burr and break. It needs to be just slightly radiused, and this procedure can be done with very fine sand paper and an old string, or a small round file. Some makers ignore this because Nylon strings are very hard and can withstand a poor set up. Sometimes bridge saddle edges on the tying side are sharp as well and should be radiused slightly with fine sandpaper.

It is good to help the strings over the nut by lifting them slightly right at the nut as you tune up. Plain Nylgut trebles stretch like crazy so you should also cinch the strings up tight on the barrels before winding. Be sure not to overlap wound strings on the tuning barrels. The preferred method is to put a set on an instrument in the evening, bring them just up to pitch, let them sit overnight, and finish tuning in the morning. This allows the molecules some time to adjust to being stretched. Give them a week or so to stretch in fully (less for ukulele strings) before passing any judgment on tone as it takes a while for them to develop their best sound.

Set with two degrees of tension. The first three strings use monofilaments of rounded, polished Nylgut® "synthetic gut". Its features include promptness of attack, acoustic projection, excellent timbre and a truly remarkable stability of intonation, not to mention an admirable evenness of tone with the overspun basses. The basses have a multifilament core in a material of new conception (Nylgut® multifilament), specially wound with pure silver, that boasts high resistance to tensile stress and stability under varying climatic conditions. Using pure silver ensures the highest possible response in terms of timbre and volume, lower interference from finger noise and durability above the norm. The overspun strings have also been designed according to the principle - again absolutely new - of progressively increasing the dynamic performance of the bass register to compensate for the human ear's natural tendency to perceive lower frequencies less audibly.
